Varun Dhawan, a Bollywood actor, has spoken up about his battle with vestibular hypofunction, a medical disorder that affects balance in humans, in the wake of Samantha Prabhu’s myositis diagnosis. It starts when your inner ear’s balance is thrown off. Varun’s diagnosis with the illness appears to have opened his eyes, but he is now modifying his lifestyle to combat it and recently discussed it in a tweet. “To all of you who have been worried, I would want to let you know that thanks to yoga, swimming, physiotherapy, and a change in lifestyle, I am doing much better. The most crucial thing is to get some sun. Above all the blessings of Bhagwan.” Lifestyle changes, exercise, well balanced diet and saying no to alcohol and smoking can help manage the symptoms of the disease. Here’s all you want to know about vestibular hypofunction.

What are the signs of vestibular hypofunction?

Vestibular hypofunction is a disorder that weakens a person’s sense of balance. It happens when the inner ear portion of your balance system malfunctions, sending the brain incorrect signals

“The vestibular system, which is housed in the inner ear, works with your eyes and muscles to keep you balanced. Symptoms of vestibular hypofunction include sensitivity to noise in a crowded area, falls, dizziness, blurred vision, and difficulty reading. Balance disorders can affect persons of any age, but as people age, they are more likely to develop them “ENT Marengo QRG Hospital Faridabad HOD & Sr Consultant Dr. Anand Gupta.

Vestibular hypofunction causes

According to Dr. Gupta, this illness might be caused by peripheral (heart, ear, and cervical spine) or central (brain) factors.

He continues by saying that other factors, such as an infection, toxins, trauma, genetic or immunological illnesses, tumours, or neurodegeneration, may contribute to the condition.

“High-volume music listening can occasionally increase the risk of this issue. The vestibular organs can get poisoned by injections such as aminoglycosides and diuretics, trauma to the ear or the head and neck region, some hereditary illnesses, and neurodegeneration “says the ENT specialist.

Addressing vestibular hypofunction

The diagnosis of the illness, which can be made by vestibular testing, is a prerequisite for effective treatment. The test known as vestibulonystagmography (VNG) can be used to determine vestibular function.

ENT and neurological tests must be performed on patients suspected of having vestibular hypofunction.

According to Dr. Gupta, drugs are also indicated based on an examination of the symptoms, and in addition to that, exercises for vestibular rehabilitation and body repositioning can be quite effective in preventing this illness.

Expert: “Some lifestyle modifications, including as exercising regularly (swimming, practising yoga), eating a healthy and well-balanced diet, and giving up alcohol and smoking, might help minimise the severity of symptoms.
